Grandpa Ron

Grandpa Ron has prostate cancer. I haven’t been socializing on-line much lately because Grandpa Ron and I have been pretty busy researching prostate cancer and treatments. We discovered we have a cancer center of excellence right close to our LA home. Grandpa Ron came home from the hospital last Friday after undergoing two days of treatment using hyperthermia and high dose radiation brachytherapy under the expert care of Dr. Ajmel Puthawala and Dr. Nisar Syad. We couldn’t ask for better care and caring! Jesse and John were absolutely super! So were nurses Sarah and Phong and aides Angelica and Marilou! Our sincere thanks to all of them!

Today Grandpa Ron is feeling a little rougher than yesterday, but he knows it will get better each day. It’s like after a good, hard workout – the day after isn’t too bad, but then the second day the body lets you know more ouch!

Grandpa Ron really wants to lay low and doesn’t want to talk about it much, so I hope the links I’ve included satisfy your curiosity.

In a couple of weeks he’ll start Monday through Friday sessions of radiation for 5 weeks.

We would not even know Grandpa Ron had cancer if it weren’t for a round with another kidney stone. Thanks to our GP, Dr. Howard Bland, and his referral to the expert urologist, Dr. Ruben Baghdassarian, we are on the current path. Dr. Baghdassarian calls it Grandpa Ron’s “Lucky Kidney Stone” because the tests done to treat it also revealed the cancer. As anyone who has had a kidney stone can attest, it still hurts!! But, now we hopefully have many more years together for more grandpa and grandma stories!

I hope everyone had a very nice Thanksgiving! We had a great time with my sister and brother-in-law. We haven’t laughed that hard in a long time! We are so thankful for our blessings and we pray for those who lost their houses, businesses, cars, musical instruments, etc. in the big Reno Caughlin Fire.

Autumn Colors – Trees, Grasses and Snowy Mountains

Our favorite road between Los Angeles and Reno is 395. We never tire of the beauty. White-out blizzard conditions we’ll attempt to bypass but the dazzling white snowy landscapes are so beautiful afterwards! This last October we experienced beautiful colors! Most of all I love the first section of the road between Bridgeport and Mono Lake (Conway Summit) that I’m sharing with you – especially in the Fall. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I do!

Redondo Beach Kayaker Up Close to Blue Whale

This is so cool! Watch this video of a kayaker getting an up close and personal view of a curious blue whale! Link – You may have seen this already as I think it went viral, but the whale really seems to be checking out the kayaker!

Aquarium of the Pacific Blue Whale Watch Tour

Grandpa Ron and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary all weekend long by revisiting places we went just before our wedding. On Sunday, 10/09/11, we went through the Aquarium of the Pacific. My favorite exhibit is the one containing the Leafy Seadragons. Here are a few photos:

After we finished touring the aquarium we boarded one of their Blue Whale Watching Tours. It was great! We saw many whales – mainly blues but a few others. The trip was great! The aquarium docent was excellent and I think everyone had a great time trying to spot whales first! Here are a few of our photos!

LA Zoo Carousel of Endangered Animals

The Los Angeles Zoo will open their new Tom Mankiewicz Conservation Carousel to the pubic on October 27, 2011. Jerry Moss (A&M Records cofounder) and his wife Ann Moss are the carousel’s major donors. Here are some LA Times Carousel Photos. There are some common animals as well as the endangered ones – and a unicorn! All the animals have friendly faces on purpose. Some have funny stories about their inclusion – like the skunk because there are so many of them “freeloading” at the zoo. If you are looking for something-not-so-scary for the family to enjoy around this Halloween or any time, check out the new carousel from Oct 27 on!
